Picks and Pans Review: Stop Me Before I Escape Again

Walter J. Wood, a convicted murderer confined in Utah State Prison near Salt Lake City, sued the prison for $2 million for letting him escape in 1984. Wood, who was recaptured within hours, said prison officials violated his rights by allowing him "inadvertently" to join an escape. "Because of extreme fear of being shot to death," Wood said in his suit, "I was forced to swim several irrigation canals, attempt to swim a 'raging' Jordan River and expose myself to innumerable bites by many insects. At one point, I heard a volley of shotgun blasts and this completed my anxiety." The suit was pending early this month.
