Among the pop-culture celebrities who made their political ambitions clear were TV talker Phil Donahue (U.S. Senate from New York), Fess (Davy Crockett) Parker (U.S. Senate from California), Love Boat's Fred Grandy (U.S. House from Iowa), basketball player Tom McMillen (U.S. House from Maryland) and country singer-composer C.W. (Convoy) McCall, who was elected mayor of Ouray, Colo., running under his real name, William Fries Sr. Discussing his aspirations with the Washington Post, Donahue said, "You know, I'd like to be in the Senate.
