We start the new year on TV watching some fine stars suffer with sadistically bad scripts: Teri Garr and Stacy Keach in a movie about Vietnam, Intimate Strangers, then Martin Sheen and Melinda Dillon in a film about alcoholism, Shattered Spirits. These shows are so painful that they make this week's rendition of Oliver Twist—orphanage, workhouse, undertakers and all—look like a sitcom frolic.
