Kashif

The Brooklyn-born Kashif is so accomplished in all aspects of creating modern R&B music that his solo albums (this is his third) could be used as text. His primary reputation is as a producer—on parts of Whitney Houston's debut LP last year, for instance—and his arrangements here are irtipeccably balanced and creative. Listen to the tripping backbeat of Say You Love Me. Kashif's previous records have established beyond question his merits as a musician and singer. His voice is more ambitious and full-bodied than before, however, and on the title track he renders a remarkable tribute to the style and spirit of Marvin Gaye. Followers of Kashif have also come to expect an instrumental treat with each release, and Condition of the Heart will not disappoint them. Movie Song is silky and vibrant enough to inspire even the most reluctant wallflower at the dance to take to the floor. (Arista)
