Ex-Harlem Globetrotter Curly Neal showed up at the White House to announce that he and his fellow Shooting Stars (a newly formed touring basketball team) were joining Nancy Reagan as roundball ambassadors for the President's drug awareness policy. After presenting Nancy with a gift basketball, Curly took some lip as she expressed her gratitude. Neal quipped, "It was my first kiss from a First Lady. I guess when you're in showbiz you do stuff more spontaneously."
No, it wasn't the latest form of punishment meted out to confessed and alleged ex-cocaine users by the baseball commissioner. Keith Hernandez, 32, was simply catching a playful poke from teammate Gary Carter, 31, at the Mets' spring training camp in St. Petersburg, Fla. Conditionally suspended by Commissioner Peter Ueberroth, Hernandez has filed a grievance protesting the punishment.
