Picks and Pans Review: Money Isn't Everything

Michael Jonzun

Jonzun, having shed the rest of his ensemble, the Jonzun Crew, proves to be more creative and rewarding as a melody maker than anyone would have suspected from his previous work. Money Isn't Everything is a project showing protean versatility that displays Jonzun's considerable gifts as—in ascending order—a multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer, writer and arranger. The funkier tracks on this LP really sizzle, most notably I Wanna Get Next to You, with its crushing bass line and crisp horns. Working out of his own Mission Control studio in Boston, Jonzun has built an urban soul sound so gleaming and smooth that, at times, it almost seems overpolished. (A&M)
