B-

Billy Wilder makes great entertainment: He wrote Ninotchka, one of my favorite flicks. He directed The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment and Sunset Boulevard. Seeing clips from all those movies is reason enough to watch this tribute to Wilder. Jack Lemmon, Audrey Hepburn, Don Ameche and Walter Matthau are more reasons. So fine, watch it. But I do not understand why the producers had to include an inane musical number in the act. Neither do I understand why, when paying tribute to a man who's been around Hollywood for almost 40 years, they give the stage to whippersnappers who've never made a Wilder movie—Jessica Lange and Whoopie Goldberg.
