Picks and Pans Review: Lost in the Fifties Tonight

Ronnie Milsap

Milsap has often sounded more soulful than he does here. His version of I Heard It Through the Grapevine is not likely to make anyone forget Marvin Gaye or Creedence Clearwater Revival, and if you still remember Barrett Strong or the Flying Lizards, Milsap's Money (That's What I Want) won't erase their memories either. This is still an easy-to-take country pop album, with some nice Mike Reid tunes (written with various collaborators). The title track was a hit as a single last year. The album should hardly stand as the definitive Milsap, but it will tide his old fans over and might even win him one or two new ones. (RCA)
