For its last series of the season, Masterpiece Theatre returns to 1984's The Irish R.M. with a six-part sequel starring Peter (To the Manor Born) Bowles as a British magistrate who's sent to a foreign land called Ireland to dispense justice and good manners. If you didn't watch the original series—and I didn't—you'll have a tad of trouble figuring out who's who to whom. But it's not hard. This is a light little romp that'll evoke closed-lip grins at most: the hired cook who stews herself on wine before the magistrate's big dinner; the aristocrats who serve bland boiled turkey at their party. The phrase "charming diversion" was invented for such shows as this.
