Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

With his first release in five years, Seger confirms that you can't judge an album by its single. Granted American Storm is repetitive and labored, and Bill Payne's piano cadenzas on that track seem too theatrical; the rest of the album, especially those songs that explore a quieter mood, is a gem. He has supplemented his old backing trio with top-notch musicians Payne, Russ Kunkel, Rick Vito, Don Henley and the Weather Girls. The title track is as moving a remembrance of younger days as Seger's earlier hit Night Moves. Somewhere Tonight is a sad monograph on relationships. Seger can still raise a passable ruckus, as on the rocking Tightrope and The Aftermath, but he is most impressive when he speaks softly. (Capitol)
