.38 SPECIAL

Some new faces are helping out the boys of .38 Special. But new producer Keith Olsen and songwriting collaborators John Bettis and Jim Vallance know better than to tinker with a good thing. Olsen keeps the sound clean. Special's sturdy Southern rockers handle the rest. The song Somebody Like You, for instance, is classic rock 'n' roll, hardhitting and catchy. The genial snarl of guitarists Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi erupts even in the unlikely settings of the down-tempo Has There Ever Been a Good Goodbye? Donnie Van Zant and his homey voice are in fine fettle. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. (A&M)
