The Fixx

It's a neat trick to make a simple two-note riff absorbing, as this British quintet does on their album's lead-off single, Secret Separation. Walkabout, though, turns out to be a one-trick animal. The melodic ideas are stuffy and unimaginative, the lyrics murky, as in Chase the Fire: "You slay the lion/ But you won't taste the meat." As always, the canned heat of Cy Cumin's voice, Jamie West-Oram's galvanizing guitar and the exciting production of Rupert Hine make for a terrific triumvirate. But only on Built for the Future and, to a lesser extent, Camphor, does this potent combination find a worthy musical vehicle. Notch up Walkabout as a near miss. There's nothing wrong with the Fixx a few better songs wouldn't rectify. (MCA)
