Picks and Pans Review: Mtv Closet Classics
It wouldn't have been the worst disaster in cultural history if these tapes had stayed in the closet they were found in, though there are a couple of nice moments. Originally recorded for West German television in the late '60s and recently shown on MTV, the tapes include such familiar tunes as Proud Mary by Ike and Tina Turner, Surfin' U.S.A. by the Beach Boys (Mike Love, in his guru period, wears a flowing caftan) and the Moody Blues' Nights in White Satin. There are also more obscure numbers, such as Mungo Jerry doing In the Summertime. It's helpful that all the performing personnel are listed on the screen during their songs, so that one is reminded, for example, that Yes included Steve Howe, more recently of Asia and GTR. Most everybody seemed to be going through the motions, though nobody could ever say that of Tina, then or now. (Vestron, $29.95)
