Stupid Pet Trick? Maybe, but Toby Laughs All the Way to the Bank

There are still people who come to the National Bank of Commerce and stare at the golden-haired patron—the one with the money bag in her mouth, rearing up on her hind legs—as if they'd never seen a dog make a cash deposit before. Such people are probably newcomers to Lincoln, Nebr., where Toby, a 3-year-old pooch, is a local notable. Nearly every day for the past 18 months, Toby has dropped off the coin receipts from Oscar's Bar, a watering hole owned by her master, Don Arena. While her feat may not be the most startling pet stunt in recorded history, it has earned no small measure of regional press coverage. "We'll be out walking and someone will yell, 'There's Toby!' " says Arena, 32, who finds the publicity a bit disconcerting. "It's weird when people know your dog and don't know you."
