Picks and Pans Review: Among Predators and Prey

by Hugo van Lawick

Van Lawick, a Dutch wildlife photographer, was Goodall's first husband and the father of her son. Many of his photographs are among the 359 black-and-white pictures in her book. His volume is a different proposition. While there is extensive text, it is all anecdotal. There's a fascinating description, for example, of a leopard stalking a gazelle, inch by inch. Here photographs, however, are the point. There are 128, all in color, many spread across two large pages. There are stunning action shots of cheetahs and lions hunting, but perhaps the most arresting picture is of thousands of wildebeest grazing on the Serengeti plains—stretching as far as the eye can see—which in this case seems to be into infinity.
