Picks and Pans Review: While the City Sleeps
It often seems that Benson needs someone to light a fire under him, but his new producer, Narada Michael Walden, is hardly the one to do it. Walden's style is more of a pop-the-artist-in-the-microwave-and-let's-get-it-done approach. But then Tommy LiPuma, who produced such memorable early Benson albums as Breezin' and In Flight, co-produced a couple of tracks on this LP, and they aren't world beaters either. Only on his own song, Love Is Here Tonight, does Benson really let go, rambling off on a long guitar solo as he scats along. There are some gorgeous musical moments on that track, but much of the time Benson just sings. As a singer he's a smooth, mellow performer out of the Johnny Mathis-Teddy Pendergrass light-soul school, but it's still as a guitarist that he is a real master. More, please. (Warner Bros.)
