Picks and Pans Review: Love's Gonna Get Ya!

Ricky Skaggs

There are a lot of surprises on this album, all pleasant. Foremost among them is a duet by Skaggs and James Taylor—an unlikely but, as it turns out, delightful pairing—on New Star Shining, a new Christmas song by John and Johanna Hall that ought to join the list of holiday classics. Another duet, by Skaggs and his wife, Sharon White, on the Nancy Montgomery-Irene Kelly song Love Can't Ever Get Better Than This, is the sound of marital bliss if ever there was such. Don Everly backs up, too, on his own I Wonder If I Care as Much. Skaggs himself seems to be having a great old time, picking (and fiddling) with lots of abandon. Some people may consider one cut a lapse of taste. The Halls' Artificial Heart, while clever enough, does perhaps make too light of a life-and-death situation. Otherwise this is an album with few lapses, in taste or anything else. (Epic)
