A companion volume to one issued last year on Topps baseball cards, this weighty, pricey book includes reproductions of all the football cards the company has printed (fronts only). It begins with a 1949 series of college players—including Joe Paterno, Doak Walker and Ernie Stautner, as well as Boomy Malekoff, Bimbo Cecconi and Langdon Viracola. Everything else, up to the 1985 USFL series and 1986 cards, is covered too. (Other companies' cards are ignored however.) While Clary, a free-lancer specializing in football, at times gets carried away ("there is no single event in this country bigger than the Super Bowl"), the text is incidental. It's a rare football fan who could resist leafing through this book. (Warner, $59.95)
