For a Moose, the Course of Moo Love Never Runs Smooth

It was one of the great love affairs of this or any year. Jessica, a chubby, 5-year-old Hereford cow, was wooed in vain by a genus-confused bull moose, and for a while the eyes of the world were trained on tiny (pop. 600) Shrewsbury, Vt. An estimated 47,000 people showed up to watch, a local politician unsuccessfully tried to marry the odd couple, and Jessica's owner, Larry Carrara, turned a tidy profit in commemorative T-shirts and bumper stickers. Alas the couple's love was doomed—they're genetically incompatible—but all was not for naught. The editors of the Rand McNally Road Atlas called Carrara and promised that if he could tell them where Shrewsbury was, they'd keep the town on the map forever.
