Elayne Boosler had a special on Showtime recently, and it was fine, okay, all right. Boosler is naturally and consistently funny, but her special wasn't so special; it gave us the kind of gags we've become accustomed to hearing from her. This special on Cinemax is different. Boosler wrote and directed it but only makes a cameo appearance. Comedy From Here puts you onstage, standing up, as if you were a comic. You see the greedy club owner and the cruddy dressing room and the audience daring you to be funny: "I hate my job, so why should I let him enjoy his?" snarls one guy in the crowd. You hear yourself tell a joke and then hear the frightening silence. Boosler's new special may not have as many laughs as her last one, but it is new and imaginative, and that's great to see.
