Picks and Pans Review: Santabear's First Christmas

UPDATED 12/08/1986 at 01:00 AM EST Originally published 12/08/1986 at 01:00 AM EST

Kelly McGillis and Michael Hedges

Santabear, whose tale of wandering into the Claus troupe makes him seem a distant cousin of Rudolph, first appeared in a children's book, then a TV special. In this sound-track recording, McGillis (Top Gun's sexy instructor) provides the lively narration and acoustic guitarist Michael Hedges the backgrounds. Hedges' noodling recalls that of pianist George Winston for Meryl Streep's version of The Velveteen Rabbit, and it's no coincidence. Co-producer Mark Sottnick also produced the Streep-Winston disc. One side of this album is all instrumental and not noticeably Christmasy. (Windham Hill)
