Picks and Pans Review: Rudolph's Shiny New Year
This 60-minute tape, like Rudolph and Frosty, is marginally better simply because it's only half as long. Otherwise the same faults apply. The songs, again by Marks, are syrupy. The Animagic process quickly becomes aninoying. And Muller's plot proves even more impenetrable. It seems Rudy is charged by Father Time (Red Skelton does the puppet voice) to find the baby New Year, who has toddled away just before Dec. 31. Old Red tells Rudy to search the archipelagoes, where the old years go to retire. Rudy must first survive an attack from a monster bird named Eon, who'll die if another year comes, since his eon is up. Get it? Muller's word games confuse contrivance with cleverness. If you're forced to play it, don't be surprised by little whimpers of "Watch Muppet Caper now, please.' (Lightning Video, $29.95)
