I wanted to love the latest Hallmark Hall of Fame if for no other reason than its cast: Stockard Channing, Sam Waterston, Linda Hunt. But, sorry to say, even such actors as these can't shine through this sophomorically sentimental and manipulative story about a bunch of too-good do-gooders. Channing teaches troubled kids. She'd have a halo except she ignores the troubles of the tenants in her boardinghouse, including a gentle Irish lass and her loutish husband, an immigrant, a student, a baby and a cellist—stick figures, all. Then Waterston as the meek-mannered cellist teaches her to be human. The show has sweet scenes and more that are too sweet (and simplistic) to stomach.
