Maureen McGovern

"This is the album I've always wanted to make," McGovern has said. For those starved for ballads—both vintage and newly minted—sung with ravishing style and purity, this may be just the album you've been longing to hear. Astonishingly, McGovern remains one of the underrated treasures of popular music. Outside of the cult following that packs her club appearances, McGovern is mostly remembered as the voice who sang the overproduced hit theme songs from two '70s disaster epics, The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno. Nothing prepares you for the vocal range and nuance that she displays here, accompanied only—some only!—by the burnished wizardry of pianist Mike Renzi. McGovern can move without a false note from seductive (I Like You, You're Nice) to plaintive (Why Can't I?) to bruised (Some Other Time). Her voice shimmers in songs of longing (I Remember and I Could Have Been a Sailor) and then pulls you up short with its deceptive power. Through 14 songs, Mc-Govern reveals herself as a singer of artistry and feeling; her album is something special. (CBS Records)
