Picks and Pans Review: Callanetics

Unlike aerobics, this regimen has no jumps, no jerks and no sweat. Callan Pinckney's program instead features a tough but very effective set of deep muscle exercises that promises to tighten, tone and lift all those saggy body parts. On this tape, Pinckney demonstrates the tiny, pulsing movements that she originally invented to correct her own severe back problems. The atmosphere is quiet, reaching almost Zen-like proportions. The 55-minute routine, directed by choreographer Pat (Grease) Birch, is interspersed with voice-overs from Callan: "This will improve your sex life whether you like it or not." There are also some startling before-and-after photographs of lumpy thighs that could inspire at least another 100 repetitions. The video costs $7 more than Pinckney's book, which has already sold in excess of 600,000 copies, but consider this: With the tape, you don't have to stop to turn the pages. (MCA, $24.95)
