Johnny Paycheck

When it comes to a novelty tune like John Long's I Grow Old Too Fast (and Smart Too Slow), there's no better country singer than Paycheck. When it comes to romantic ballads like Hilka Maria Cornelius' Butterflies and Babies, there's nobody worse. And when it comes to Buck Moore's The Other Man ("The only man I'll share you with is Jesus/'Cause I know that He's a better man than me"), we're talking unsingable no matter who you are. That adds up to an erratic collection, helped out by Buddy Spicher and Kenny Sears's fiddling and a duet vocal with Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie on the Cajun classic Jolé Blon. You don't have to take this record and shove it anywhere. Just listen to it selectively. (Mercury)
