It was not your usual cattle call of the rich and talented. Happy Birthday, Hollywood!, staged at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium for airing May 18 on ABC-TV, was a production number that might have caught Busby Berkeley's admiration. Liza Minnelli belted and Ann Miller tapped and, in a segment on special effects, Charlton Heston wielded his Moses staff to whisk a flying saucer over the crowd. The evening went like a top right up to a tribute to the movies of the '40s and '50s. Technical gremlins forced narrator Van Johnson to reshoot scene after scene. Finally, exasperated, Johnson turned to the audience and said, "Hollywood, my ass." That's entertainment.
