Simon Gray's play about teachers in a quaint, second-rate English school is nothing so much as an excuse to gather together a wonderful collection of characters: a ditsy but dear man named St. John Quartermaine, played with grace by Edward Fox; a proper but nosy principal, played by Sir John Gielgud; a bitter spinster, a pompous boor, a whining klutz, a failed novelist. They're not the sort you'd want to dine with, but they are a delight to watch.
