Picks and Pans Review: A Game of Control

It's hard to stifle the guffaws when Ron Woods, narrator of this United States Tennis Association tape, says, "Although fiercely competitive, tennis has a long tradition of sportsmanship and proper conduct on the court." Hey, Ron, ever hear of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl...? Woods, a USTA official, does address the issue of temper tantrums, but only among teenagers. The rest of the 20-minute tape seems useful, stressing the importance of striving rather than winning, and there are brief interviews with such people as baseball's Steve Garvey, who talks about losing gracefully. Aimed at teenage players, the tape ought to be required viewing on the pro tour. (USTA, 729 Alexander Rd., Princeton, N.J. 08540, $25)
