Fuzzbox
The British have a keener appreciation for jokes than we do. They even make them into pop stars. Take this godforsaken female quartet from Birmingham—please. On their debut album, punky instrumentation and tempos that careen out of control mingle with dull melodies. The vocals are flat and overdubbed, more chanting than singing. Among the material is a supposed spoof of Roxy Music's Love Is the Drug entitled Love Is the Slug and a version of Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky. The latter has now been covered eight million times, but it has never sounded as dismal as in the hands of these four, who go by the names Magz, Jo, Tina and Vic, which when you think of it sounds more like a bowling team. The unusual group moniker was adopted during an early gig when they were getting roundly booed (deservedly, one imagines). One of the girls onstage responded to the catcalls by alluding to an electronic guitar distortion device: "We've got a fuzzbox and we're going to use it." Unfortunately, they have. (Geffen)
