Two sure signs that music videos are Out: 1) NBC pushes Friday Night Videos to Saturday morning at 1:30, then moves David Letterman kicking and kvetching to Fridays in the videos' old time slot. There Dave gets record ratings; 2) CBS tries to lure teens to the tube on Fridays by launching In Person From the Palace, a show with lots of music but no sophomoric, slickly edited scenes of rock stars on beaches. The stars simply sing, onstage, before an audience. How old-fashioned. How nice. In the premiere, already aired, the names were big enough: Cyndi Lauper, Billy Vera, Mick Fleetwood. Their offstage interviews with host Bobby Colomby were too smiley and silly, but the music was good. And when it comes to music—as the decline of MTV and clones points out—audio counts more than video.
