Buck James is an old-fashioned doctor show: Dr. Kildare in cowboy boots, Marcus Welby in a Stetson. Dennis (McCloud) Weaver plays Buck (based on the real-life Dr. James "Red" Duke), a trauma-center doc who performs daredevil rescues at work and grapples with family traumas at home. Fine. But we've been spoiled by series like (the early) St. Elsewhere. Between the gripping emergencies and the touching family scenes, we now expect richer drama and characterization. Buck doesn't deliver.
