The once-maligned sitcom certainly has become respectable, so much so that even PBS is making some—six of them, each with a different stellar cast (with the likes of Teri Garr, Swoozie Kurtz and Steven Wright), writer (Beth Henley, Spalding Gray, Wendy Wasserstein) and director (Alan Arkin, Jonathan Demme). In the first week's show, Rosanna Arquette comes to see her future in-laws and meets disaster—a burned roast, a lost diamond ring, a battle over the last piece of lemon pie. Cute, very cute. The shows aren't hilarious but they are wittier, wiser and more watchable than Hooperman, the ABC sitcom that wants to be on PBS.
