Part of the pleasure provided by this annual is that its collection of magazine and newspaper photographs is a yearly reminder of how many talented photographers there are. This edition, covering photographs published in 1986, includes shots of the Challenger disaster, revolution in the Philippines and in Haiti, Clint Eastwood as mayor of Carmel, Calif., and Dr. Ruth giving a speech while standing on a milk box. There seem to be an inordinate number of sports pictures and pictures of people with deformities, but most of the photographs are worth seeing—or seeing again. For the record, the Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the Press Photographers-University of Missouri School of Journalism selections was Bradley Clift of the Hartford Courant. James Nachtwey was named Magazine Photographer of the Year for pictures he shot for TIME, and free-lancer Geoffrey Biddle won the photo essay award. (Running Press, paper, $14.95)
