Spalding (Swimming to Cambodia) Gray is another darling of the sparkling-water-and-backpack bunch, another gentle man with a gentle wit, another intellectual who tries to look like a lumberjack. He's another Garrison Keillor, except he's less hokey, more amusing, more intelligent and a helluva lot easier to take. You'd expect to find him on PBS, but here he is on HBO, sitting onstage, just talking—about buying a cruddy house in the Catskills and trying out for a movie with Far-rah Fawcett. That's what Spalding Gray does for a living: just talk. He calls himself a monologuist. I call him mildly amusing.
