Jane Austen, you old card. You kept 'em giggling back in the 19th century. But judging by Northanger Abbey—which Masterpiece Theatre calls your spoof and parody—you wouldn't cut it today, even on Saturday Night Live. Sorry, Jane. Call me an unlettered boor, but this TV rendition of your novel just bored me. Newcomer Katharine Schlesinger plays a forever-sighing young lady who gets carried away with romantic visions from gothic novels and doesn't see the greedy reality around her. She falls in love with Peter (Equus) Firth as a dopey dandy who lives in a castle. But his family wants her just for her money. A festival of Brit twittery.
