José Carreras

Among the joys of Christmas music is its universality; one can listen to successive songs performed by pop, rock, jazz, country and classical musicians without getting seasick. Some seasonal songs, however, are more suited to the power of such singers as Carreras, a Spanish opera star. His O Holy Night and Ave Maria, for instance, are touching experiences. The lighter tracks, such as White Christmas, seem stiffer Carreras' English pronunciation can be wrenching too. Carreras sings on the LP in five languages, after all, but somebody should have told him that the "sleigh" in Jingle Bells is not pronounced "slee." (CBS Masterworks)
