Picks and Pans Review: Marsalis Standard Time—vol. I

UPDATED 01/25/1988 at 01:00 AM EST Originally published 01/25/1988 at 01:00 AM EST

Wynton Marsalis

There are a couple of original Marsalis compositions on this album, but it's mostly the young trumpet virtuoso with a trio doing such old reliables as Caravan, Cherokee and April in Paris. Marsalis is in typically precise, enterprising-yet-easy form, and pianist Marcus Roberts dips imaginatively in and out of the trumpeter's solos. (Columbia)
