Picks and Pans Review: Best of Gene Kelly

Gene Kelly

Memory is essential to enjoying this record, gleaned from Kelly's MGM movie musicals. Otherwise, I Got Rhythm (from An American in Paris and complete with music Kelly danced to) just sounds like an arrangement with too long an instrumental bridge. And Kelly's voice is too passive for the sentimental numbers such as Heather on the Hill from Brigadoon. But those who can keep the memorable dance sequences in mind should get warm feelings from such tracks as 'S Wonderful and, of course, Singin' in the Rain. It's easy to imagine Kelly splashing through those puddles, though this package would still be better on videotape. (MCA)
