They are kids with little reason to smile—about 250 children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned, including an 11-day-old baby found in a Dumpster. They are sheltered now at Los Angeles County's MacLaren Children's Center, and each year in March they are embraced, on Celebrity Day, by hundreds of Hollywood volunteers who come to hug, romp or just walk hand-in-hand with them. This year there was a carousel to ride, animals to pet, hot dogs, tacos and popcorn, autographs and Polaroid pictures, and a thrilling surprise performance by Run-D.M.C. "I keep doing this because the kids look so outrageously happy," says five-time Celebrity Day veteran Danny DeVito. "It's one day that everybody smiles."
