Picks and Pans Review: Laura Ashley Bedrooms

by Susan Irvine

There is something very comforting about the Laura Ashley look, which has to do with a longing backward glance to a gentler time. This stylish book is intended to inspire rather than guide step-by-step. Irvine, a British free-lance journalist, delves into the history of the bedchamber and discusses examples of rustic, country-house, romantic, town and period (Elizabethan, Stuart, Empire, Edwardian and Louis XVI) bedrooms. Each style is explained, with tips on creating an appropriate mood. And there's not a TV set in sight. (Harmony, $20)
