Picks and Pans Review: The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

Showtime (Sat., July 9, 10 p.m. ET)

Last year about this time, Showtime's super music series, Coast to Coast, started off with a visit to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Now host Herbie Hancock returns to make an entire show there. Great idea. Great music. You hear big stars: B.B. King, Al Green, Los Lobos, Allen Toussaint, Rita Coolidge and Maria Muldaur singing sexy. Better yet, the show shares some musical discoveries, including the singer Zachary Richard, who's known as a Cajun Mick Jagger, and a Trinidad superstar named the Mighty Sparrow. This one hour of spectacular song wastes not a minute, not a note.
