Picks and Pans Review: The John Wayne Birthplace
Only 125 miles from the Hoover Museum is another American shrine, the birthplace of Marion Robert Morrison. Morrison, who became John Wayne when he moved to Hollywood to do what a man's gotta do, was born in a four-room cottage in Winterset, Iowa, on May 26, 1907. "Lordy, he was a big baby," said one young mother recently to her son, seeing the birth certificate that lists baby Marion's weight at 13 lbs. Ronald Reagan is among the fans who have come to see such memory-lane items as the eye patch Wayne wore in True Grit and horseshoes from Dollar, Wayne's personal steed.
