Picks and Pans Review: 100 Percent Polyester
Think of it as a history of art writ on shirtback. At San Francisco's Museum of Modern Mythology until Sept. 4, this show, subtitled "Shirts of Art from the Palette of Science," includes more than 200 polyester shirts produced in the golden age of Dacron, 1968-78, in art history-oriented designs from the Lascaux Cave paintings to the abstract whirls of Jackson Pollock. Among the shirts, many plucked from thrift shops, are examples decorated with da Vinci's notebooks, Van Gogh's sunflowers and Mickey Mouse as Gainsborough's The Blue Boy.
