Picks and Pans Review: Golf Shots

This slick videozine should become the standard by which all others are judged; it's that well produced. Unlike most video magazines, it provides a table of contents inside the jacket, so you can fast-forward to the corresponding video section. Each issue is hosted by a different golf-playing celebrity, who tackles a first-rate course, accompanied by a top teaching pro who provides commentary and tips along the way. There's a snappy pace because the round is broken up every few minutes with segments on different aspects of the game, such as interviews with top players, equipment features and profiles of the course they're playing. In the premiere issue, former basketball star Rick Barry shoots a 76 on the Doral Country Club course—the Blue Monster—in Miami. In the second, former pro football player and announcer Tom Brookshier takes on Marriott's Desert Springs Resort and Spa course in Palm Desert, Calif. There are also recurring departments on rules and history, among other subjects. This is all done in a sunny, breezy format—ideal conditions for any golf outing.
