With all the comic timing of a stoplight, CBS remakes a 1958 Cary Grant/Ingrid Bergman film delight and turns it into a 1988 Robert Wagner/Lesley-Anne Down TV snorer. The story's the same: Down plays a British actress who risks scandal by falling in love with Wagner, a married man. But Wagner, it turns out, is only pretending to be married so he can stay single. The story is cute but it's hardly riveting. What made the original a classic was not the plot; it was Grant's charm and Bergman's class. So here come Wagner and Down begging to be compared. And that's too bad, because Wagner is charming...for a TV actor. And Down is classy...for a latter-day Joan Collins. But they are not Grant and Bergman.
