Crystal Gayle

Gayle has made more ambitious albums. She has also made albums that were far less welcoming. Most of the tunes, by such composers as Wendy Waldman, Karen Brooks, Randy Sharp, Billy Vera and Beth Nielsen Chapman are intelligent and easygoing. Except for the country tune Tennessee Nights, this is a collection of smoothly produced pop songs. Gayle and producers Jim Ed Norman and Eric Prestidge show a sense of humor, putting otherwise unrelated songs called Love May Find You and Love Found Me back-to-back. And Dennis Locorriere adds a striking duet vocal—with some Marvin Gaye overtones—to Love Found Me, which he co-wrote with Troy Seals and Eddie Setser. "Less is more" is not a precept that Gayle has often followed, but here it works nicely for her. (Warner Bros.)
