Picks and Pans Review: Live from Washington...it's Dennis Miller

He's far more obscene than he needs to be—everybody knows you're a grownup and can say the bad words, Dennis. But Miller, the "Weekend Update" anchor on Saturday Night Live, has a mordant, Mort Sahl-ty kind of edge to his jokes. This hour-long routine, an HBO special last February, is a stream of maliciousness in which he slashes at such targets as West Virginia ("This place makes Mayberry look like a think tank"), President Reagan's age ("This guy would have been kicked out of Menudo 60 years ago"), Hare Krishna members ("It says right in the Bible that God created us in His own image, and I just know He wouldn't wear His hair like that") and Jim and Tammy Bakker ("Hard to believe Jim Bakker would want to go outside the marriage for sex, huh?"). There are also brief, unfortunate prologues and epilogues in which commentator Edwin Newman, supposedly counseling Miller about the advisability of returning to comedy from his SNL news anchor spot, succeeds only in mightily embarrassing himself.
