WANTED: NO LAUGHING MATTER

Is Jim Carrey hot, or what? Having helped launch Batman Forever on its blockbuster way with his over-the-top performance as the Riddler, Carrey can now concentrate on the $20 million he'll receive—the most ever paid to a comic star in a movie—for playing a cable-TV installer in the Columbia Pictures comedy Cable Guy, due next summer. Although studios all over Hollywood are bombarding him with offers nearly as lucrative, a source close to Carrey says that the star and his advisers are considering when the zany actor might try a more serious role. A producer friend says that half of Hollywood has already been put on notice to find a dramatic vehicle for Carrey. Word is that if the right one comes along, he'll do it for a much-reduced fee....

The news from Seattle is that Melanie Griffith has moved into the house that her beau, Antonio Banderas, has rented while he's there filming Assassins with Sylvester Stallone....

During the making of Batman Forever last fall and winter, Chris O'Donnell was Robin by day and a student at night. He was enrolled in several courses at UCLA to earn credits he needed to complete his degree in marketing from Boston College. According to his rep, O'Donnell was so over-scheduled that he wrote one of his final exams in his Robin costume on the set. Holy diploma! He graduated in May....

In other Batman news, Michael Keaton has yet to see Batman Forever, which he was to star in before Val Kilmer filled his cape. Keaton's rep says Keaton will probably see the movie at a later date....

Tyne Daly, 51, and Tales from the Hood star Clarence Williams III, 55, who have been friends since their early acting days some 30 years ago, recently began dating. The Cagney & Lacey star was previously married to actor-turned-director Georg Stanford Brown, and the onetime Mod Squad star was wed to actress Gloria Foster....

Ever-ambitious Drew Barrymore, seen in recent public appearances wearing Calvin Klein men's briefs peeking over her waistband, has approached Klein execs about appearing in a series of men's underwear ads....

I've just heard how Pamela Anderson—who with new husband rocker Tommy Lee is expecting a baby in February—spent her wedding night. She posed naked in her honeymoon suite while a shirtless Lee partially blocked strategic areas of her anatomy. She handed over these shots, plus some never-before-seen tapes (allowing glimpses of her changing breast size) for inclusion in The Best of Pamela Anderson, just out from Playboy Home Video for $19.95....

And finally, from my O.J.-related Anything-for-a-Buck file, comes notice that in November, Crown Books will publish the Mezzaluna Cookbook, featuring recipes from the L.A. restaurant where Ron Goldman worked and where Nicole Brown Simpson ate her last dinner.
