THIS JUST IN ON MURPHY BROWN

Don't look for TV's Murphy Brown to be going from a Ms. to a Mrs. this fall. Though last season's Murphy Brown cliffhanger left marriage plans for Candice Bergen's title character and her boyfriend, Peter (Scott Bakula), temporarily on hold, I can now report that the couple will never make it to the altar. In fact, it's not even clear whether Bakula will return to the show; he has yet to hear from the show's producers about whether they want him back next season. Still, romance-hungry viewers will likely be seeing some bouquet-throwing in the first few episodes this fall. That's because I hear that a surprise wedding is being planned involving the show's other lovebirds: Corky, played by Faith Ford, and Miles, played by Grant Shaud....

As for Bakula, this is not an especially terrific time for him. His CBS pilot Prowler, a police drama, was not picked up for the new season. Furthermore, Bakula and his wife, Krista, have announced they are divorcing after 14 years of marriage. The Bakulas have two children, daughter Chelsea, 11, and son Cody, 4....

The stars of 1993's Grumpy Old Men, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Ann-Margret, got together over the Fourth of July weekend with director Howard Deutch and new costar Sophia Loren at Manhattan's Carlyle Hotel to do a private rehearsal-reading of the script for the film's sequel, which begins shooting later this month....

After having had no contact whatsoever in recent years, Drew Barrymore and her mother, Jaid, have made up. Mother and daughter began writing letters to each other last spring and were seen exchanging olive branches in person recently over a three-hour lunch at a restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. A source said the two did more crying than eating....

Roseanne's ex-husband Tom Arnold is in the process of ridding himself of the tattooed tribute to his former wife placed on the left side of his chest, over his heart. According to his rep, Arnold has already undergone "several" tattoo-removal procedures, and the darn thing still hasn't completely disappeared. But this is normal, said the rep, who added that Arnold's treatment schedule has been disrupted because he's on location in Toronto working on The Stupids, an upcoming John Landis comedy he's starring in....

Fran Drescher, star of CBS's The Nanny, is creating an animated Nanny Christmas special for the network. Her partner on the project is husband Peter Marc Jacobson, also a co-executive producer on her series....

Expect Mandy Patinkin's character, Dr. Jeffrey Geiger, on the CBS series Chicago Hope, to be phased out before the end of next season. Patinkin, you'll recall, has been wanting to leave the series, which is shot in L.A., so he can spend more time with his family in New York City (PEOPLE, 5/29/95). He's coming back, says a Chicago Hope source, because producers didn't want to eliminate the character too abruptly....

Finally, Ralph Fiennes has emerged as the newest leading contender to star in Paramount's big-screen version of The Saint, based on the '60s TV series with Roger Moore. Paramount's decision to go after Fiennes comes in the wake of turndowns from both Brad Pitt and Mel Gibson.
